The risk of long term diabetes complications is related to overall blood glucose control that is above ranges for many years. Complications are obviously one of your concerns as a parent, but if you and your child work hard at getting the blood glucose values as close to target as often as possible so complications can be prevented. The HbA1c is a way to measure this; it looks at the amount of glucose attached to your red blood cells. This is measured every 3 months. Children, especially very young children have different targets to adults as they don’t always detect there low blood glucose values and very low HbA1c‘s are not suitable for them and they are individualized to the child.
